WD Malaysia’s First Door-to-Door Warranty
Category: Computer, Gadget, Internet, Mobile, News, Peripherals, Technology
Western Digital, a leading global hard drive manufacturer with major manufacturing operations in Malaysia, announced the launch of its unique “WD Express” warranty replacement program, whereby WD collects in-warranty WD hard drives from and delivers replacement WD drives directly to the homes and businesses of its Malaysia customers. A first of its kind to be offered by a storage vendor in Malaysia, WD Express is another WD commitment to provide premium service to customers in the country.
Starting from February 26, WD Express will be available to all WD customers in Malaysia. The replacement operation will combine an online product-return system (Return Material Authorization - RMA number generation) and national toll-free customer help line with a door-to-door courier arrangement for drive replacement.
This service is available on all WD drives sold through WD’s Malaysia distribution channel. As per the program, in the event of a drive failure, customers can register the drive’s serial number and generate RMA numbers on the company’s website at www.westerndigital.com/support. Customer service representative will contact the customer to confirm the pick-up address and arrange to pick up the in-warranty failed drives from their doorsteps within 2 working days, and a replacement drive is then couriered back to the customer within a week in general. A toll-free help line (1800-88-1908) has been set up to assist customers if they have encountered any RMA problems and issues.
Commenting on the new service and support set-up, Ms M K Tan, Director, Global Services Operations, Western Digital, said, “WD is a leading player in the hard drive industry both globally and in Malaysia. The WD Express warranty replacement program provides our customers with best-in-class standard of service and support, complimenting WD’s high quality products. The program inspires trust in WD’s customer service among our customers, just as our products have proven to be consistently reliable.”

Your door to door pick up service for failed drives is fantastic, but when one of my WD hard disks failed a year and a half ago, my concern was not a free no question asked, no hassle replacement policy by WD but more the recovery of the lost data itself. In most cases, when a hard disk fails, reasonable cost wont really be the issue. Its the data recovery that is crucial. I had to go to a lot of places to try and see if the valuable data could be recovered, but alas that wasn’t possible, because in that instance, it was apparently the motor or something mechanical that failed. I was sure at least 95% of my data was still intact on the magnetic platters, and if WD had wanted to help, they could easily have dismantled the drive, retrieved the platters, copied the contents or whatever was recoverable into a new disk, and then delivered the replacement disk with recovered data back to the sad victim. I am sure if you had done that with my failed disk, you would have won a friend, nay, a lifelong WD evangelist. As a result of that failed WD hard disk however, I have since then, always consciously and firmly avoided buying WD disks ever again. If you truly want to be a world class consumer orientated manufacturer, you should consider adding an affordable data recovery service in your after sales service strategy. Even if you had failed to recover the data, at least an unhappy customer would have felt slightly better in that the WD itself had tried to recover the data, but unfortunately didn’t succeed. In fact you could be sneaky and not even attempt to recover the data itself in cases where you would know that the data wasn’t recoverable but the fact that you have a data recovery service at all, would add volumes to public confidence in using WD hard drives.
Now why do I feel that a FREE one terabyte WD hard disk from you to me could salve an old open wound.
Yours Sincerely
Yusuf Hashim
